Description

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) cards are used for various applications, including access control, payments, transportation, and inventory tracking. These cards comply with recognized RFID card standards that ensure interoperability, security, and functionality across different systems and devices.

  1. Frequency Bands of RFID Cards

RFID cards operate in three primary frequency bands, each with its standards and use cases:

Low Frequency (LF)

Frequency Range: 125–134.2 kHz

Standards:

ISO 11784/11785: Animal identification and low-frequency tags.

Proprietary standards for access control (e.g., HID Prox, EM4100).

Applications: Access control, animal tracking, and industrial systems.

Characteristics:

Short read range (up to 10 cm).

Slower data transfer rates, but highly resistant to interference.

High Frequency (HF)

Frequency Range: 13.56 MHz

Standards:

ISO/IEC 14443: Supports contactless smart cards, such as MIFARE, NTAG, and DESFire.

ISO/IEC 15693: For vicinity cards (longer read range compared to ISO 14443).

NFC Forum Standards: Used for Near Field Communication (NFC) applications.

Applications: Access control, payment systems (e.g., contactless credit cards), and public transportation.

Characteristics:

Read range up to 10 cm.

Faster data transfer rates and secure communication protocols.

Ultra-High Frequency (UHF)

Frequency Range: 860–960 MHz (region-dependent)

Standards:

ISO/IEC 18000-6: Defines EPC Gen 2 (Electronic Product Code) for UHF RFID.

Applications: Supply chain management, asset tracking, and inventory systems.

Characteristics:

Long read range (up to 12 meters).

High data transfer rates, but more susceptible to interference from metal and liquids.

  1. Common RFID Card Standards and Protocols

ISO/IEC 14443 (Proximity Cards)

Overview: Standard for contactless proximity cards used in high-frequency (HF) RFID systems.

Divided Into Two Parts:

Type A: MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire, and other cards.

Type B: Used in government-issued ID cards and passports.

Read Range: Up to 10 cm.

Applications: Payment systems, public transportation (e.g., metro cards), and access control.

ISO/IEC 15693 (Vicinity Cards)

Overview: Standard for vicinity cards with longer read ranges than ISO 14443.

Read Range: Up to 1 meter.

Applications: Library systems, parking systems, and asset tracking.

ISO/IEC 18092 (NFC)

Overview: Standard for NFC (Near Field Communication) devices, enabling communication between RFID cards and smartphones.

Compatibility: Fully compatible with ISO/IEC 14443 (HF RFID).

Applications: Mobile payments, smart posters, and contactless business cards.

ISO/IEC 18000-6 (UHF RFID)

Overview: Defines communication protocols for UHF RFID systems, including EPC Gen 2.

Applications: Asset tracking, supply chain management, and inventory control.

EPC Gen 2 (Electronic Product Code Generation 2)

Overview: Industry standard for UHF RFID systems.

Applications: Retail inventory management, logistics, and warehouse tracking.

HID Prox (Proprietary Standard)

Overview: Widely used low-frequency RFID cards for access control.

Applications: Door access, employee ID cards, and building security.
